Goals of the NAERIC Young Horse Program at Cook College:
TEACHING: Provision of our students (over 30 per year!) with the
opportunity to train and handle young horses and to participate in
a variety of research activities. In addition to helping with Dr.
Ralston's research projects, George H. Cook Honors students design
and conduct their own research projects, usually looking at some
aspect of behavior and/or nutrition.
RESEARCH: Acquisition of new and important information on the nutritional
requirements of rapidly growing horses. The emphasis has been on
finding ways to optimize the nutritional management to prevent developmental
orthopedic disease. In addition we obtain new information on the
management of prolonged (34+ hours) transportation stress and prevention
of "shipping fever" in horses of all ages each year.
OUTREACH: Increased public awareness of the Equine Science Center
and the Department of Animal Science Teaching, Outreach and Research
programs at Cook College through the publicity surrounding the auction
and Ag Field day.
