Big Jake is healing in half the time
with no surgery!
Jody Baton of Kilgore, TX was watching her daughter Brittney run
barrels on “Big Jake”, a 25 year old Quarter Horse that has been
part of their family for 22 years. Jake had been a team and calf
roping horse his whole life and was now taking the next generation
of the family around the barrels.
As he rounded the 3rd barrel that fateful morning, January 8th 2005,
he missed his footing on a flaw in the arena floor and gutted his
right rear leg, tearing 90% of his deep digital flexor tendon and
the sheath as well. Jody’s daughter tried to rein him up but could
not and he raced into the alley (still placing 3rd!) with his leg
dangling behind.
Jody then immediately got him to the vets at Texas A&M and they
scheduled him for surgery on March 7th. In hindsight Jody realized
that they put the surgery date out that far in order to prepare the
family for putting Big Jake down. They knew that horses, especially
older horses, do not generally recover from this injury (most injuries
of this type have a 30 – 40% tear – Big Jake’s was 90%!). But what
they didn’t know is that Jake had a secret weapon on his side. He
was using EquiPride!
During his second checkup, the vets began asking Jody what she was
doing with the horse, that he had accomplished about 40% healing?
“Take us through the steps”. “Nothing”, she said, (still upset) “just
wrapping and feeding him”. The consensus then was: Well, whatever
you’re doing, keep doing it because we won’t take the risk of putting
him under and doing surgery, especially after seeing what’s happening
in the leg.
At his third check up, Big Jake’s leg had almost completely filled
in and was mending fast. The vets again asked Jody what she was doing
to the horse that he was healing, and healing so fast! She then mentioned
EquiPride and this had them stop to scratch their heads and want
to know more about it. Young horses who have surgery are often on
1.5 to 2 years of stall rest and a sling, but Big Jake, who is 25
and had no surgery - can now back in and out of the trailer and will
have his splint removed in September! Then he can start exercising
again! This will be about 9 months after the injury. He’s twice as
old, healing twice as fast with no surgery and has even gone up a
shoe size since being on EquiPride! Jody credits EquiPride with giving
Big Jake’s body the tools it needs to heal itself.
Jody has all her horses on EquiPride. From 93 pounds to 1,257 pounds!
Little Jake, who weighed 900 lbs when she rescued him 4 years ago,
would not gain weight and always kicked the stalls during feeding
time due to his previous starvation. After the third scoop of EquiPride
he stopped kicking the stall walls and has since filled out to his
proper size at 1,257 lbs over a year and a half period. Now at events
he tries to sneak EquiPride on the side if she doesn’t guard the
pail!
